Glassworks Summer 2012 News

Every year, I think summer will never get here. Although we in Seattle complain about our gloomy June that gives way to the blue skies of July, we can use glass panels to let in a lot of natural light and to reflect the light within our space year round. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why there are so many glass studios in the Northwest.

Another way to make the most of our delayed summer weather is to get out and meet others, learn, and enjoy the opportunities in the area. Belonging to professional groups and attending meetings is a great way to shake off the grays. CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women); WGA (Washington Glass Association); ASID (American Society of Interior Designers); and NBIS (Network of Business Innovation and Sustainability) are just a few of the organizations that are indeed energy boosters!

Yum! China Visits Glassworks

We were happy to host a delegation from the Yum Corporation, China division. Our team gave a guided tour through the showroom and studio floor and treats were courtesy of the Essential Baking Company.

Barkitecture puts Glassworks in the Dog House

Glassworks was excited to be a part of Barkitecture Seattle 2012 hosted by LUXE magazine and benefiting the Seattle Children’s PlayGarden & Seattle Humane Society. We crafted custom ‘dog bone’ leaded glass windows for one of the 10 unique dog houses and gardens constructed by Seattle’s best architects, builders, interior designers and landscape professionals. These canine cottages were then auctioned off by Seattle’s top real estate brokers.

Summer 2012 Design Partner Feature: Wall Art & Sculpture

What do we do and why do we do it?  There are some businesses that understand their mission, are laser-focused and forge ahead.  We’ve been a bit more malleable.  Our business has morphed many times throughout the years in response to trends in style and creativity.  Along the way, we have completed some fantastic projects.  Always learning, we’ve also taken projects we probably shouldn’t have, because they were interesting, and because we wanted to work with a specific client.  What a way to run a business- and run it has.

Despite our “running” a bit haphazardly for many years, we have survived (because of the talent of the founder and the skill of our great staff).  2016 was our best year to date; 2017 is 1/6 completed.  We are very much on track, and constantly looking to drill down on the first question of this paragraph. “What do we do and why do we do it?” Focusing on the “why and what” will be essential as we charge ahead to meet future challenges and continue our success.

Team Member Profile: James Martell

,

James (aka “Jay”) is Glassworks’ professor in residence.  He knows about the composition of glass, compatibility and glass nuances.  Ask Jay about the melting or annealing points of glass or other aspects of glass and he will gladly share his knowledge in a very thorough and understandable manner.  He can take a production problem, break it into segments and methodically deal with each issue successfully.

He has many talents in addition to his skilled polishing and cold working abilities.  Jay has worked with glass since 1989 and is well versed in blown, cast and kiln formed glass. As a glass artist, his work has been featured nationally and internationally. He can weld, solve challenging installation situations and identify building maintenance priorities – he is truly a “Jack-of-all-trades”.  We are very fortunate to have him as a key Glassworks team member.

Glassworks Spring 2012 News

Springs is here- or just around the corner, so it’s time to renew, refresh and dust off some recurrent ideas and actions.   I borrowed an idea from someone so long ago I can’t remember who it was but that’s ok, because it’s a good thing and if you’d like to borrow the idea from me, that’s just fine with me.   We give back to the community in a varied and systematic way.  When we receive a referral from a past client, at the completion of the project, we make a donation in the referral’s name to a non-profit agency of their choice.   Throughout the years we’ve donated to over twenty-five organizations, some more than once.  They’ve represented a spectrum of organizations – from Treehouse for Kids to our most recent, Architects without Borders – Seattle, a Jim Seeks (Seeks Design Assoc.) request.

It’s the time to plant new ideas, think of new projects, help friends and give non-profit agencies a boost.  We’re looking forward to growing our donation list ten-fold this year.

Glassworks featured again on HGTV/DIY Networks’ Bath Crashers

Glassworks has been featured again in the fourth season of the popular reality show Bath Crashers on HGTV/DIY Networks. This season’s episode, titled “Seattle Espresso Suite”, brings something new to a local bathroom: a vertical partition of slumped glass. Due to the extremely fast-paced nature of the show, the designers specified the glass with us before assessing the accessibility of the room being remodeled, which resulted in the host of the show, Matt Meunster, needing to hire a lift to bring our glass through a second story window! Spring 2012 Design Partner Feature: Anthony’s Restaurants

Glassworks has provided site-specific architectural art glass for Anthony’s Restaurants in the Pacific Northwest for 15 years. Working with Joey Ing, interior architect, we have fabricated many one-of-a-kind glass applications, which have made each restaurant unique. These custom creations have included etched insulated door glass, countertops, light fixtures, mirrors, signage, and more. Our most recent collaboration was for Anthony’s first “off the water” location in Alderwood, Wa. We met early in the design process with the architect who held a vision that the glass in this restaurant would play a key role in maintaining the natural aesthetic that is essential to the Anthony’s brand. The highlights of this project were a lit floor piece resembling a stream and a multicolored glass shell for the wall (seen above). We also created a custom bar and countertops with our signature “water texture” and a wall of etched partitions resembling sea kelp and bubbles (seen below).

Anthony’s Origins

Anthony’s Restaurants are a family of twenty-two unique waterfront locations throughout the Pacific Northwest.  A locally owned company, Anthony’s traces its history to 1969 when Budd Gould opened the Fox Restaurant in the Bellevue Crossroads. This Steak and Lobster restaurant was followed by Mad Anthony’s, which opened in 1973 in the Bellevue Commons.  Mad Anthony’s was named after the Revolutionary War General “Mad” Anthony Wayne.  It was an early American themed pub which featured prime rib and seafood. Future Anthony’s restaurants migrated to the waterfront providing guests with a truly Northwest dining experience, specializing in fresh local seafood. The two original restaurants were later sold enabling the company to focus on the growth of waterfront locations.

Anthony’s has grown into a titan within the seafood restaurant industry of the Pacific Northwest, earning many awards and accolades along the way. Glassworks is pleased to play a continuing part of this growth.
