For more than forty years, Glassworks has fabricated functional architectural art glass that both dazzles the eye and fulfills a useful function, thanks to collaborations with creative interior designers, architects, and home and business owners. Starting this quarter, Glassworks is initiating a new section of our blog and email newsletter that celebrates the success of our many creative and innovative design partners, beginning with Jeff Lamb of J Lamb Studios and V3 Studio in Portland Oregon.

Glassworks "Sapphire" Glass Feature Wall

Glassworks “Sapphire” Glass Feature Wall

Jeff included our work in his recent interior design of a penthouse in the Escala building, located on 4th and Virginia in downtown Seattle. This elegant new high-rise condominium features 24 hour concierge services, a private theater/conference room, exercise room, and underground parking. The grand foyer, dominated by a swirling metal staircase, leads you past the large concierge desk toward a hallway of elevators. After taking a short ride on the ultra-fast and private elevator to the 30th floor, you are greeted in the entry way by a glass feature wall by Glassworks. Made of alternating strips of our heavily textured kiln-formed “Sapphire” glass, the white-clear material gives the impression of pure ice crystals frozen in time. Just beyond, the entryway powder room features an all-glass vanity by Glassworks with integrated sink, frosted and textured with real fichus leaves and surrounded by wood framed mirrors. As you proceed to the main space your breath is stolen by the rich natural light pouring through endless windows and ceilings more than 10 feet high. This northwest-facing residence features nearly continuous 180 degree views of downtown Seattle (including an intimate view of the Space Needle), the Puget Sound, and the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges.

Jeff took advantage of the changing natural light by filling the open floor plan living spaces with reflective white oak floors and over 110 square feet of our heavily textured clear “Sapphire” glass on the bar. This same glass is also used to cover the master bathroom counter. Beyond the surrounding windows you find a curved and covered terrace wrapping around the master bedroom, living spaces, and guest bedroom. Perfect for year-round entertaining, Jeff Lamb’s work creates an open and inviting space that reflects the views. This penthouse has received praise from Wendy Leung of the Seattle Condo Review blog. Wendy writes that this space was the highlight of her tour at the broker’s Open House in March 2010.

Jeff Lamb was educated in Architecture at the University of Oregon before finding inspiration during a travel fellowship where he studied the romanticism of Italy and modernism in Germany and Switzerland. He started his career at BOORA Architects, then he took the position of Design Director at Sienna Architecture Company where he designed award winning buildings including Ashland Middle SchoolNorth Park Lofts and Irvington Place. Lamb’s career really took off after designing AIA/Portland‘s award-winning offices. He currently holds the position of Principal at V3 Studio and runs his own J Lamb Studios where he focuses on “sustainable urban placemaking” and mixed use formats to enliven the built environment. Jeff’s work also includes furniture design, rug design and custom lighting. His work has been featured in numerous design media outlets including Luxe Magazine, Western Interior Magazine, the Travel Channel, and HGTV. Two of his recently completed interior designs have received awards from the Seattle Design Center’s regional interior design awards program. He received both the Ion Lewis Traveling Fellowship and most recently the Margo Grant Teaching Fellowship from the University of Oregon in 2008. Jeff has built his career on his work being practical, elegant, and very responsive to construction budgets. An extensive list of his project experience can be found in his website, www.jlambstudio.com and www.v3-studio.com.

Glassworks was honored to be included by Jeff Lamb in this jewel of a penthouse in Seattle’s Downtown. In order to accommodate his specifications, we were able to push the limits of our fabrication studio and the creativity of our production artists, learning new techniques that we can now apply to future work with Jeff and our other design partners in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We are excited to be able to share Jeff’s work and experience with you, and we look forward to next quarter when we will take the opportunity feature another member of our design partner community.

Socially responsible companies like Glassworks know that businesses can only thrive when community social programs and non-profit organizations are supported in their work to improve society as a whole. Our design partners and referral partners often share this desire to connect and share with our extended communities. To facilitate further opportunities to collaborate with industry partners in our social mission, Glassworks has developed a unique referral program.

When Glassworks receives a referral that becomes a job, we donate $50 to the non-profit of the referrer’s choosing. Over the years, our partners have helped us support a variety of local and national organizations including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Seattle Symphony, American Red Cross, and many more. Last quarter, John Adams of Stuart Silk Architect helped us donate to Pratt Fine Arts Center, taking advantage of a triple-match opportunity to fund their Wood Working Program, after sending us a lead on an art glass partition wall at a dentist office. Jennifer Hayden of Pental Granite & Marble asked us to share in her love of animals by donating to ASPCA, after referring a local software company to us for a glass transaction counter. Thank you John and Jennifer for your generous community support and for entrusting Glassworks with your contacts.

If you have a referral opportunity to share with Glassworks, please contact us. If we are able to convert the lead into a job, your generosity will be shared with a community organization of your choice.

Blog[GoodWorks]

Some years ago we established a way to thank clients who refer other clients to us. When a past client refers a new client to us, we make a donation to a non-profit organization on the referring client’s behalf. We have made donations to diverse organizations like the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Seattle Symphony, and St Andrews Housing Group, to name just a few.

Recently Like many other small businesses, we have been negatively impacted by the current economy; however we have been fortunate to keep this program active. We have had wonderful clients who continue to refer more wonderful clients to us. We recently made donations on our clients’ behalf to Kentuckiana Children’s Center, Seattle Asian Art Museum and the American Red Cross. We are happy to continually support non-profit organizations that contribute to the richness and well being of our communities.

Glassworks is proud to announce that principal, Tish Oye, has been accredited with a LEED AP credential. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design in Commercial Interiors, is the nationally accepted benchmark for green construction and design.

What’ up next for Tish? Determined to make the company and their fabricating process more sustainable, Tish is deeply committed to sustainable building practices. The company’s beautiful new series of recycled glass countertops create amazing impact but are fully functional as well. Plans are currently in the works to heat their facility with the heat from the kilns they use. Oye’s perspective is that it’s about the little things smaller companies can do to lower their carbon footprint and be a good neighbor at the same time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Latest News” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_class=”latest-news-new-page”][vc_row_inner el_class=”new-post-carousel”][vc_column_inner][na_posts_carousel height=”277px” excerpt=”0″ comment=”none” catg=”none” dot=”false” autoplay=”false” slide_visible=”2″ txtsize=”24px” txtclr=”#000000″ dateclr=”#686868″ descclr=”#888888″ settings=”size:10|order_by:date|order:ASC|post_type:post|categories:20″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”get-in-touch-block”][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Have a Vision for your Unique Space? ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_custom_heading text=”Get In Touch” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23597b7c|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_class=”get-in-touch-link” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fglassworksinc.com%2Fcontact-us%2F|||”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Hawaii, HI -Glassworks participation at the 2008 Pacific Building Trade Show in Honolulu, HI on October 9, 2008 was highlighted by the firm’s introduction of recycled glass offerings as well as displays of new fabrications that shine the light on innovative ways to integrate glass into design. Part of Glassworks’ overall mission to explore the dynamic use of glass for residential and commercial new construction and remodeling projects, the featured offerings highlighted the company’s forward-thinking stance in the field of design.

Spotlighting the exhibits were textured glass that resembles ice. Born from a project for the ICE SPA at the SHERATON ANCHORAGE, the process allows designers to implement crisp, innovative glass materials as a unique design element. Also featured are the firm’s latest offerings of slumped and mirrored glass. Ideal for kitchen and bathroom backsplashes, the reflective glass surfaces provide detail and variety that traditional splash back materials cannot achieve. Always exploring the use of color, the booth also featured samples of Glassworks ’ innovative use of multi-colored glass and glass with painted designs. A unique opportunity for customization and design, the multi-colored glass and paint processes can be fabricated to echo any color element in a design pallet and can be matched to interior or exterior tile, paint, fabric, or even upholstery.

The show was also an opportunity for Glassworks to draw attention to its ongoing partnership with Quantum Building Products of Kailua-Kona, HI. Featured at the Quantum Building Products booth were two examples of wooden doors built with Glassworks ’ door panels fabricated in “illustrated” slumped glass. The first door incorporated slumped glass panels with a creative, life-size bamboo pattern. The second door integrated a traditional kimono pattern into the slumped glass process. Part of Glassworks innovative way of using molds and pattern glass, the ‘illustrative’ effect can be realized in any pattern or shape and can be customized to fit any door or window Quantum Building Products makes.

As part of the Glassworks’ trade show tradition, there was a drawing for a large, kiln form decorative glass bowl. This year’s lucky winner was Heather Beerman of Susan Palmer Designs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Latest News” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_class=”latest-news-new-page”][vc_row_inner el_class=”new-post-carousel”][vc_column_inner][na_posts_carousel height=”277px” excerpt=”0″ comment=”none” catg=”none” dot=”false” autoplay=”false” slide_visible=”2″ txtsize=”24px” txtclr=”#000000″ dateclr=”#686868″ descclr=”#888888″ settings=”size:10|order_by:date|order:ASC|post_type:post|categories:20″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”get-in-touch-block”][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Have a Vision for your Unique Space? ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_custom_heading text=”Get In Touch” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23597b7c|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_class=”get-in-touch-link” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fglassworksinc.com%2Fcontact-us%2F|||”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Hawaii, HI -On October 9, 2008, Glassworks unveiled its introduction into the sustainable marketplace with a display of recycled glass countertops at the Pacific Building Trade Show in Honolulu, HI. A unique offering of translucent, green glass cast from pre-consumer recycled shower doors, the panels range in size up to twelve feet and, depending on their use, can be up to 2” thick. The recycling project was born from a unique arrangement with one of the nation’s premier glass shower door fabricators. “As part of their quality control process, the company used to send any doors identified with scratches or small dings to the landfill,” explains Glassworks owner, Tish Oye. “Under our new program, they ship the doors directly to Glassworks.”

The tempered glass used for shower doors is a perfect “raw” element for the recycling process. When the shower doors arrive at Glassworks, they are broken up into small, pebble-size pieces. The pieces are then put into a mold and re-fired. Under the heat of the Glassworks kiln, the “pebbles” melt together to form translucent cast glass. “The end result has the same integrity and beauty of glass made from non-recycled materials,” continues Oye, “But these pieces have the added benefit of not contributing to a landfill.”

The new recycled panels are available for custom designs and are a welcome addition to builders and remodelers in the commercial and residential marketplace who are seeking to create dynamic green building offerings. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Seattle, WA – Known in travel circles as the hotel that “values the genuine over the generic,” it was no surprise when DEGEN & DEGEN ARCHITECTS AND DESIGN contacted GLASSWORKS to create an entrance of glass panels for the SHERATON ANCHORAGE ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB project they were working on. Situated on the sixteenth floor of the expansive, luxury hotel, the ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB offers guests breathtaking views of the Alaska skyline as well as a state-of-the-art cardio experience. “The hotel interior is defined by original, native art and sculpture,” explains GLASSWORKS owner, Tish Oye. “They wanted the ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB to reflect not only its name, but the hotel’s deep respect for the surrounding native environment.”

Working closely with DEGEN & DEGEN ARCHITECTS AND DESIGN staff, GLASSWORKS created a series of vertical swaths of glass ice to “hang” in the entrance and reception area of the ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB. Using cast, starfire glass as a starting point, GLASSWORKS’ master glass craftsman, STEVE SHAHBAGHLIAN, created the glass entrance to reflect the shape and crystal quality of the hotel’s outdoor setting. “Basically we took the look of fresh, crisp ice after a major snowstorm and recreated that in glass,” says SHAHBAGHLIAN. This was achieved by choosing cast glass that intentionally has most of its natural green coloring taken. Able to deliver a crystal, clear-like appearance, the GLASSWORKS’ “ice” creates a unique visual experience for ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB visitors and staff. “We didn’t just want to hang a series glass rods,” explains SHAHBAGHLIAN. “We wanted to recreate that icy brilliance and dynamic energy that happens right after a big snow.” One of the latest additions to the luxury marketplace, The ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB and its GLASSWORKS icons will also be featured in the Network of the Hospitality Industry’s (NEWH) upcoming national publication.

In both look and feel, GLASSWORKS delivers on that promise. As imaginative and open as the Alaskan frontier itself, the ICE SPA HEALTH CLUB reception area invites the eye and presents that ‘bracing’ environment so often welcomed by fitness devotees. In fact, it offers everything from the Alaskan great outdoors, except the cold![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Latest News” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_class=”latest-news-new-page”][vc_row_inner el_class=”new-post-carousel”][vc_column_inner][na_posts_carousel height=”277px” excerpt=”0″ comment=”none” catg=”none” dot=”false” autoplay=”false” slide_visible=”2″ txtsize=”24px” txtclr=”#000000″ dateclr=”#686868″ descclr=”#888888″ settings=”size:10|order_by:date|order:ASC|post_type:post|categories:20″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”get-in-touch-block”][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Have a Vision for your Unique Space? ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_custom_heading text=”Get In Touch” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:55px|text_align:center|color:%23597b7c|line_height:60px” google_fonts=”font_family:Lora%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_class=”get-in-touch-link” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fglassworksinc.com%2Fcontact-us%2F|||”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Seattle, WA – On Saturday, April 12, 2008, GLASSWORKS opened its doors to the staff of MASINS, the Pacific Northwest’s premier furniture and interior design resource. An intimate gathering of like-minded artisans, the GLASSWORKS staff conducted personal tours of the GLASSWORKS’ facility and demonstrated the depth and range of the kilns and processes. “Nothing shows the beauty of the glass we create better than standing in front of a heated kiln,” explains GLASSWORKS founder and master craftsman, STEVE SHAHBAGHLIAN. “This was an opportunity for some of the finest design minds in our area to see, first-hand, the depth and variety of the GLASSWORKS’ Collection.”

Part of the GLASSWORKS tradition of working directly with architects and interior designers to develop unique, one-of-a-kind glass masterpieces, the MASINS tour represents the personal style and interaction that is essential to the GLASSWORKS process. “The artistic imagination of the people we work with is one of the most essential aspects of what we do,” continues SHAHBAGHLIAN. “It was thrilling for all of us at GLASSWORKS to have an opportunity to share ideas with the MASINS’ staff and show them how their ideas could be realized in glass.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Founded in 1927 by EMAN MASIN, since then, four generations of MASINS have been defining the design integrity of the Pacific Northwest.
